#62 Summerdale, AL 3-3 thru 3-4-09

On the way to Summerdale, AL we had to go over many bridges. Some had been damaged by the hurricanes. We are on the old bridge looking at the new bridge being built. It is a lot higher off the water so the hurricanes won't wash over it and damage the road spans. Look at all the cranes working on the bridge. They are based on big barges that are secured right next to the pilings. It was really interesting to see. Can't drive to this job, have to take a boat!

Before we arrived in Summerdale we filled with Diesel. It was $2.27.9. Uh oh, the prices are going up again! We've gotten used to the below $2.00 a gallon diesel.
We parked at the Escapee's Rainbow Park in Summerdale, AL. Huge spaces with full hook-ups. We were in space 12 and our friend, Rex, was in space 23 on the same road. Rex, and his friend Tricia, were our guides while we were there. We were on the go from the moment we finished hooking up the RV. Rex took us to a wonderful seafood restaurant the first night. The next day we started off at the US Naval Air Museum in Pensacola, FL. This is the home of the Blue Angels. The museum is wonderful. We did a tour with a guide who was a retired Navel Flight Surgeon. He told us stories of the airplanes and where they were used. For a moment, Frank was a Blue Angel. They have to be very agile to get in and out of these planes. The pilot seat is not very big. There are so many planes parked in the museum it looks like chaos. But there is a path around them with signs telling about each plane.
This was just like the gun where Frank had to stand for general quarters when he served on the USS Laws in Korea. He had to stand there when the gun was being fired. He switched back and forth for loading and gun operator. No ear protection--can you imagine how much noise these things made?

In the upstairs area of the museum a 1940's town has been recreated. There was a grocery store, showing prices, ration coupons and the products that were available. Above is a replica of a movie theater.

A Marine is getting his shoes shined.

Frank taking it easy in the 1940's home. No Lazy-boys here. And, of course, Dixie is outside on the front porch! All that's missing is children and a dog!
