#63 Fort Barrancas FL 3-4-09

After leaving the Navel Air Museum in Pensacola we drove down the coast to an old Spanish Fort. This fort was first built by the Spanish and then reconstructed in the mid 1800's to defend this Florida Bay. It is one of three forts that guarded the entrance. One was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ivan, and the other fort is completely gone. Only the site remains. This is the entrance to the fort and the bridge you see goes over a dry moat. Anyone that got as far as the moat didn't have a chance. There were gunners on either side of the moat to protect the fort.
Below is one of the tunnels that held the gunners. They surrounded the redoubt above where the big cannons were.
Below is one of the guns that were placed overlooking the bay. There were a series of them, all on half circle pads to swing the gun into position, and I suppose for loading the balls.

This is the gunners windows. Each section had two gunners shooting in different directions.

All the hallways and doors were arched. It was an amazing place to walk and to be in a part of history that is still preserved. Time was short, and we just walked around the inside tunnel. After a very busy and interesting day we drove back to the RV park and had BBQ'ed fresh Shrimp Kabobs. We bought 3 lbs of fresh shrimp in New Orleans and brought with us, and we cooked some of the rice we bought in New Iberia, LA at the Kon Rico Rice Co. The guys cooked the shrimp and we made the rice. We surely eat very well!!
