#51 Corpus Christi 2-11 thru 2-12-09

We left Kingsville early (around 10:00 a.m.) for us. We wanted to get a good start before the wind started. We arrived in Corpus Christi around 11:00 p.m and stayed at the Porta Del Sol RV park. The park itself isn't much, but the view and the location was right on the water. We were parked in the front row about 10 feet from the water. Only one problem. We could only stay for two nights.

We went to the visitors center and figured out where we could go after we left the RV park. They were very helpful. We decided to take the 70 mile loop around Corpus Christi, Port Aransas, Mustang Island and San Padre Island. The county park we decided to go to was on San Padre Island. So we checked out the park and on the way back to the RV we stopped for dinner at Joe's Crab Shack. On Wed. evening right off the marina there is a regatta. So we stayed to see the sailboats racing out of the marina. The wind picked up really nice about 6:00 p.m and the boats really took off. It was beautiful to watch.Sunrise out the window of the RV on 2-12-09. The beginning of a beautiful day.We went first the the Heritage Square and visited the old homes that have been moved from off the bluff overlooking the bay. The house above is used as a rental. You can have a wedding or function in the house. The last house we visited has been restored by the Junior League, complete with antiques and other historical artifacts. The lady that did the tour was quite entertaining. She was well traveled and has lived here a long time.

We had lunch at pier 99 and then on to the Texas State Aquarium. We were greeted by the flat billed platypus, standing over a pool of sting rays.

The sea horse was hard to capture on camera. They move very fast and they are very graceful. We were just in time to see the diver feed the fish. While the diver fed the fish, we were educated about the fish and their food.

On to the turtle tank. This is where they rehabilitate the turtles that have been hit by boats or found on the beach. They release the ones who can survive back into the Gulf, but some of them are injured so bad they have to stay in the aquarium. Each one has a name and they come to the handlers and eat out of their hands. I think that is Einstein above sticking his tongue out at us!
The dolphins put on a show for us. We watched from the viewing under water while one of the dolphins played ball. He even dribbles the ball under the water.

The aquarium is more than just water animals. They also have a place to rehab birds and other small animals. This is only one of the birds that has been rehabilitated.

The aircraft carried Lexington sits right across the water from the aquarium. We didn't tour that ship, we've been on the Midway three times and that was enough for us.Ah, Mosaics. Isn't this the cutest crab. It is all done with little square tiles. I just had to take a picture of it.

The Aquarium is one of the best kept secrets of Corpus Christi. It is like a Sea World without all the people. It is very well done and very educational. We both agreed that is was the best part of the day.
