#88 4-24-09 Richmond, VA

Another beautiful day on Friday, so we decided to drive 22 miles into Richmond and view the Capitol building. We found a great parking place just down the street from the hill where the building is located.

Walking up to the building you actually enter underneath the original building and into the addition which is all underground. We were 30 minutes early for the tour, so we grabbed a sandwich at the capitol lunch room right inside. Perfect timing!

I loved the wall that bordered the entrance. A living wall with all kinds of planters and flowers growing out of planters. Very nice design.

One of the first sculptures we saw was of George Washington. This is actually a life size statue. He was over 6 feet tall. A big man for the time.

The state seal is painted on the ceiling of the dome. If you look closely at the seal you will see the crown is knocked off his head and the motto is something like “death to tyranny,” but don’t quote me. I can’t remember my Latin.

If you look at the first picture of the Capitol building, you will not see a dome. But it is there and provides a sky light into the old Capitol building. All the paintings on the ceilings have been restored and are beautiful.

After spending four days touring the sights we spent the weekend enjoying our time at the park, found a nice church to attend Sunday and then headed toward Washington, DC on Monday.
