We left Rockport, ME and headed Down East, as the Maine folks call it. I’d call it Up North, but what do I know. I asked someone why they called it Down East and he said it had something to do with the wind direction for the boats. Really didn’t answer my question, so I still don’t know why it’s called Down East.
This is the bridge we had to cross to get onto Desert Island where we stayed near the town of Southport, ME. Smugglers Den Campground was where we parked for three nights. We had a pull through site with full hook-ups and 30 amp power. This campground was one of the stops for the free shuttle bus to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. We took advantage of the bus and went into Bah Ha Bah. Gotta talk like the Main folks or they won’t understand us.
It was a beautiful day and before we caught our trolley tour we walked through the town and down by the harbor. Check out the luxury craft and the four masted schooner.
The building below has marker buoys all over and is a great display of all the different colors and combination of colors used to mark each lobster man’s traps.
Our trolley guide has lived in Bar Harbor all his life and had lots of stories to tell us and lots of history. He spends his winters in Florida!
One of the places we went in Acadia National Park was Cadillac Mountain. The highest peak in Maine and the first place in the USA to see the sun rise. This is a view of the harbor and if you look off in the distance you can see the fog over the Atlantic Ocean. Now you can see how the fog is moving in and obscuring the islands.
The top of Cadillac Mountain is granite. There are lots and lots of “pink” granite.
Here we are on the top of the mountain over looking Bar Harbor.
In the lower left portion of the picture you can see the bar that Bar Harbor was named for. During low tide you can walk on the bar out to the Island, but at high tide it is covered with water.
On the way down off the mountain, we stopped at Thunder Hole.
There wasn’t any thunder today. The waters were calm. Lots of people though!
The fog is reaching us and by the time we were off the mountain looking back it was shrouded in fog.
I loved the wild flowers and the pink granite. The textures and colors are beautiful. In the park by the docks are the most beautiful extra large Hydrangeas.
A bee is busy collecting pollen. I can’t believe I was able to catch him working. It only took three tries!
