We left Portland, ME Elks lodge and headed about 60 miles north to Rockland, ME. We read about the Lobster Fest that happens each year on the first weekend in Aug., and knew we could do that. We stayed at the Elks lodge in Portland. There were 4 other campers staying there. One of them stays all summer! We only had 15 amps of electric and no sewer, but we were able to refill our water tank from a hose on the side of the lodge. We paid the lodge $10.00 a night. We couldn’t have been any closer to the festivities. A short drive straight down the road and we were at the festival. It started the day before we arrived, so the first night we were there we went down and had a lobster dinner!
We eat in a tent, but there are hundreds of volunteers during the festival and they serve, clean up, cook, sell tickets, etc. So even though we eat at picnic tables we didn’t feel rushed.
The next day we headed back to the fest for some steamed clams and mussels. When we started out it was overcast, but dry. By the time we ate lunch and headed back to the car, we were really glad to have brought our umbrellas. I hope you can see just how hard it is raining and how deep the puddles became before we could get back to our car. Amazing weather!
Saturday was parade day and the weather co-operated. It was sunny and warmer. We even sat in the shade to watch the parade.
Check out some of the neat entries into the parade.Saturday was the big day at the Festival. People from all over Maine drive to attend this festival.
The volunteers cook over 60,000 lbs of lobster!
These are just some of the lobsters just waiting to be devoured.
This is just part of the line waiting to get their lobsters!
Rather than wait in line for our food, we opted to just get a lobster roll. This looks like a hot dog, only it is filled with the meat out of the claws of the lobster. No work and mmm mmm good!
We had a funnel cake for desert! We thought about you, Todd! It was good.
Because it was such a nice day we took advantage of the Coast Guards offer of touring one of the Coast Guard boats.
Thank you Coast Guard, Brian.
We went back to the RV early, too many people and it was getting hot and we wanted to check on Gidget. She was fine, so we went to the Lodge and had our cocktails. While there we met Jack, who told us he could get us some fresh lobster right off the boat. With one phone call he had the lobster fisherman bringing us six fresh lobster by 6:00 pm this evening!
The lobster weighed about 1 1/2 lbs each. We paid Randy, the lobster man, $25.00. Then Jack went home and brought back a lobster cooker and told us how to prepare them and how long to cook them. Can’t beat those fellow Elk members!!
Before, Cooking and after. It doesn’t get any better than this!
The end product!
Our appetizer was steamed mussels, cooked in our own RV home.
Of course we couldn’t eat all six of those lobster, so we got all the meat out and saved it for a few more meals.
