#101 NYC Downtown Tour 6-1-09

We have the RV parked at Liberty Harbor RV park and Marina in Jersey City, NJ. This is the closest RV park to Manhattan. In order to get to Manhattan we have to walk to the PATH (Port Authority Trains) Station, about seven blocks away, and then transfer to the subway when we get to the World Trade Center stop. The first time was quite confusing and we had to ask directions a couple of times. It took us almost an hour to find the meeting place to pick up our tickets for the bus tour.

We met Laurie, Rachel and Collin right off Times Square around 11:00 a.m. and took the City Tour of downtown Manhattan. We rode in a double deck bus, on the top deck in the open air seats. Each bus has a tour guide to point out the sights. It is a get on and get off tour, which is a lot of fun.

Above is a view down the street from the top deck of the bus. Lots of different architecture in the buildings.

This is the ”flat iron building,” one of the most photographed buildings in NY.

The mural above is really interesting if you look at it. Not only does it advertise Donna Karen, but it is also a skyline of NY. The guide said these are all done like “paint by number” outlines.

Can you see the helicopter circling the Empire State Building? That is actually a tour you can purchase!

The fence above is covered with tiles that children made after 9-11 in honor of the families of people who died in the attack on the World Trade Center.

You only hear about Central Park in Manhattan, but there are many little parks scattered throughout the city. Above in one of many, this one named after Winston Churchill.

Above is the original Macys building. Tall and narrow. Below is one of the entrances to the new Macys, which takes up an entire block and is 9 stories high.. Check out the sculptures above the door.

We hopped off the bus and went to Little Italy for lunch. We at at the Da Nico. Now don’t we took like a bunch of tourists?

Here we are in the garden dining area, waiting for our food to arrive. It was quiet and serene with trees and flowers. Nice to be away from the noise of the street.

Our desserts have arrived! We couldn’t pass up the Tiramisu and the Cannoli.

We walked through China town. I was amazed at all the fresh fish and sea food you could buy. Below is just one of may fresh vegetable stands.

On our way back to catch the bus we passed by one of the oldest churches in NY and the cemetery behind it. Rachel is standing just outside the cemetery gate.

On Bleeker Street the tour guides couldn’t use the microphones. There are a lot of apartments and the residents complained about the sound. I loved the fancy iron works on these fire escapes below

Although these pictures are out of sequence, they show some of the highlights of our tour. Above is the Brooklyn Bridge. It is still for sale.
