Again, Brian was our guide. We all slept in this morning so didn’t leave the park until after 11:00 a.m. Our first stop was still in VA at the Great Falls National Park.
This is the falls that stopped river traffic from going upstream for trade. This was a big surprise for us. We hadn’t read anything about this park.
As you can see it is magnificent. Roaring water, jagged rocks and beautiful greenery.
Smile, Brian—the Urban Cowboy—is taking our picture.
Lots of Blue Herons flying about and fishing in the turbulent waters of the Potomac River.
Have you any idea how may shots I took to get these birds in flight?? Pretty awesome sight.
Above is part of the canal that was built to navigate around the falls. This part of the canal is in Maryland. We are crossing the canal in Georgetown.
Because it was getting late in the day, Brian just drove us around and I took pictures from the car. Above is The Watergate Hotel. Anyone who remembers history will remember the scandal that brought down the Nixon Presidency.
A long range view of the Capitol Building
Brian surprised me with a stop at the Washington DC Greenhouse. The guys sat in the Orchid room while I wandered through all the different rooms taking pictures of the flowers. All of the plants were so different and interesting to me. If you want to see some of the things I saw, view the full Album. If you wish to skip flowers, feel free to do so!
Below is Union Station. One of the buildings we drove by.
My first picture of the White House. This is as close as we can get with a car.
The National Cathedral. It took 100 years to finish.
Our last stop was really an interesting stop. It was Glen Echo Park, which is an old park that was restored almost single handed by one Ranger and lots of volunteers.
The carousel was all restored by volunteers.
This is a beautiful carousel as you can see below.
The pool was opened during the Great Depression, and was big enough for 3,000 people and included a sandy beach. The Art Deco style, which set the tone for the rest of the park.
The bumper car ride is now a place where groups can rent and have small dances and parties.
You can see below how the Art Deco style carried throughout the park.
The Mexican Ballroom is still used today. There are dances every Fri, Sat and Sunday night.
The Candy shop. Great picture. On the way back to the parking lot we walk through the “woods” and by the Yurts that are used in the summer for arts and crafts.Getting back to the parking lot you have to go over the little foot bridge and over the creek, which volunteers lined with rocks and brought back to life.
After a wonderful day we went to Iris and Brian’s home and had a wonderful home cooked meal. Brian drove us back to the RV by 9:00 p.m. The idea is to be off the “beltways” from 3-7 p.m. That is the rush hours of the evening. We don’t have to worry about morning rush hour. I’m never up by the time rush hour is in effect!!!
