Our first view of the Cape while we are crossing the Canal.
We spent the 4th of July weekend in Bay View Campground. This is very close to where you cross over the canal. We had rain the first day we were there, but it cleared up for the weekend of the 4th. We pulled in on a Thursday and got all set up. There were lots of empty spaces in the early afternoon, but by Thursday evening it was filling up. There are over 200 spaces in this campground, but we felt very secluded by trees and brush. The campground has two pools, a rec hall, lots of games for kids and it a very friendly, clean area. We parked on gravel/dirt pad with a cute rock fire pit, which we didn’t use.
The traffic over the bridge onto the Cape was horrible. We knew that we didn’t want to fight the weekenders, so we pretty much stayed in the campground for the weekend. On Saturday we did take a ride down to about the middle of the Cape and go to an outdoor swap meet and then found a wonderful Pizza place for lunch. We were away from the beach and the bigger towns, so it was a nice drive and the day was sunny and warm. For fireworks, we turned on TV (we had cable) and watched the Boston Pops and Neil Diamond. Then 30 minutes of wonderful fireworks from the comfort of our living room!
Sunday we went to church and checked out the little town of Falmouth. We went the opposite way that all the weekenders headed. The road going off the Cape was backed up for miles.
On Monday we headed to Martha’s vineyard. We took the ferry from Falmouth. Parking the car in the lot $15.00 a day Two senior ticket on the ferry $68.00. Two senior tickets for the bus tour of the island $36.00—not including lunch! Pretty spendy day, but it was beautiful!I thought if we went on a work day it wouldn’t be too crowded. This is just part of the line to get on the ferry. We managed to get up on the deck, sit in the sun and not have anyone in front of us. Great seats, wonderful weather. We are lucky.
Heading out of the harbor. Look at all the boats! They are stacked three high and you can’t believe how many more are in the water! Everyone who lives there must own a boat of some kind.
Our first view of the Vineyard. Clouds—go away!
Our bus tour took us to all of the five villages on the island. The driver told us about many of the buildings and sites we drive by. Really too fast for me to take any good pictures. We stopped by the old light house for lunch. The Native Americans that still live on the island run the concession stands. Gifts, souvenirs and food.
Can you see the light house in the distance? What a beautiful day!
This grasshopper weather vane is on top of a grocery store. I though it was unique.
Just one of the many coves we saw—filled with boats.
Back at Oak Harbor. This Carousel is called the Flying Horse Carousel. You can ride the Carousel and even catch the gold ring.
She got it!
After we left the Carousel, we walked through “the Campground.” This is so unusual and cute. I took lots of pictures!
The Campground was was originally a meeting place for Methodist revival meeting. Is now summer city of a thousand wood frame cottages that were originally tent sites.
The open air Tabernacle is a unique wrought iron building. It is still used to hold meetings and events. All the cottages are built around this.
One of the cottages is now a museum and we visited it to be able to see inside. It is decorated in period pieces from the late 1800’s, as you can see by the pictures below.
I took so many pictures of the gingerbread trims, and the colors because the workmanship was so whimsical and creative!
After walking around many, many cottages and gardens we decided we needed a little libation. So we found a really cute bar right on the harbor and had us a cool drink. While sitting and talking to the locals, and taking pictures of huge boats, we got our picture taken, too!
Us, relaxing.
Big boat.
Sail boat dog!
After gawking at all the boats and visiting with the local men at the bar, it was time to board the ferry back to the Cape.
On the way out of the harbor we were greeted by tiny sailboats coming back in from a nice day on the water.
Get out of the way little boats, we’re heading out!
The day was so wonderful, weather wise and other wise. We didn’t want it to end.
After we left the parking lot and headed back to our RV, we decided it was a good time to try some fresh lobster.
I know it’s not Maine lobster, but they sure tasted good and the whole dinner was only $7.00 each. Not bad after all the other costs for our day on Martha’s Vineyard.
Cute little place with outdoor seating. We say many families stopping here for dinner with us!
A very full day and a great adventure. Tomorrow we move down to the tip of the cape. Rain expected!
