#116 Newport, RI 6-30 thru 7-2-09

On Tuesday we left for RI. We had a very nice day to drive and we were only going about a hundred miles. The campground we stayed at was Meadowlark Mobil Home and RV Park. Getting to the park was fairly easy. No long narrow roads. But the park wasn’t really set up for big rigs. The spaces were short, all grass and not level at all. We were in such a “hole” that our steps wouldn’t go out. We had to block up the rear and that put the front too low for the automatic steps to clear the ground. When we parked it was sunny and nice and we thought it would be OK to park. We were parked so close to the guy behind us we couldn’t park our car in front of the rig. This is more for Mobile Homes than big RVs. I wouldn’t recommend this place at all.

By the time we left on Thursday, after some pretty heavy thunderstorms, we were in a mud hole. We got out, but made sure we didn’t stop until we were on pavement. The RV park was in Middleton, RI, which is right outside of Newport. We ended up in Newport each day while we were there. It is a cute little town and geared for tourists. Everything is pretty high priced and even the parking for the shops and restaurants is not free. I guess the town gets the money from the tourists while it can! One lady told us during the winter all the parking is free!

On Wednesday we were going to go on a walk along the cliff below the mansions, but it ended up pouring rain. So we had to change our plans.

This is the restaurant we went to for lunch! You can see the rain bouncing off the pavement! I took this picture looking out a window.

In the morning we started out for our walk, but ended up just driving down Bellevue Ave.

Because of the weather, we just drove by the homes and took pictures. Now you can see too!

Above is Rosecliff built in 1902. This is from the brochure: “A fantasy in terra cotta, some of Newport’s grandest Gilded Age parties were staged here. Cole Porter was a frequent house guest, composing and playing the piano in an upstairs sitting room. It’s ocean views and expansive lawns create a dreamlike atmosphere.”

Check out the neighbors. How would you like to be able to “keep up with the Jones's in this neighborhood?

We were able to get out of the car and walk around the outside of the Astor’s Beechwood Mansion. We even bought tickets to the Big Band dance for that night! Wasn’t it nice of the Astor’s to invite us?

Above is the Doris Duke mansion. I just loved the topiary camels out in the yard!

For any of you golfers out there, here is a golf course where I didn’t see a tree anywhere! This was as close as we could get to the club house.

Check it out—I didn’t know anyone who would invite me!

Do you recognize Mrs.. Astor’s guest? We are in the ballroom waiting for the band to start.

The dancers (some dressed up), and the 18 piece band. There were even two singers. It was very nice.

Above is one of the rooms that were set up for the dance. This room is painted in Wedgewood blue and ivory white. It is beautiful. The picture doesn’t do it justice.

A long day. Gidget was glad to have a lap to sleep in!
